Leadership Awards

Established in 2012, the Leadership Awards are the highest honors given by the ACS New York Section’s Chemical Marketing and Economic Group (CME) to outstanding leaders in various sectors of society for harnessing the transforming power of chemistry for the benefit of mankind. Daniel D'Aniello - 2019 Lifetime Achievement Leadership Award

Daniel D’Aniello – Co-Founder and Chairman Emeritus of The Carlyle Group, a public global alternative asset management company based in Washington, D.C. with over $200 billion in assets under management, operating across six continents.  The Carlyle Group originates, structures, and acts as lead investor in many forms of investing activities including: Corporate Private Equity; Real Assets; Global Credit; and Investment Solutions (fund-of-funds).

Prior to forming Carlyle in 1987, D’Aniello served as a Vice President for Finance and Development at Marriott Corporation, where he was involved in major corporate mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, debt and equity offerings, and project financings. Before joining Marriott, he served as a financial officer at PepsiCo Inc. and Trans World Airlines. D’Aniello earned a bachelor’s degree in transportation economics from the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, graduating magna cum laude and a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. He earned an MBA as a Teagle Foundation Fellow from the Harvard Business School in 1974.

He served in the United States Navy from 1969 through 1971 during which he was a supply officer aboard the USS Wasp (CVS 18). Mr. D’Aniello is Chairman of the American Enterprise Institute; Co-Chairman of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families; Chairman of the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts; and a Lifetime Board Trustee of Syracuse University.

 

Martin Brudermueller - 2019 Extraordinary Innovation Leadership Award

Martin Brudermüller – Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of BASF SE. Having lived in three continents and established an impeccable reputation as an innovation leader in various fields of chemistry, Brudermüller brings an exceptional global business and technology perspective to the chemical industry. As artificial intelligence plays an even larger role, Brudermüller’s commitment to industry leadership is exemplified by the deployment of the most powerful computer in the chemical industry. At 1.75 quadrillion calculations per second, QURIOSITY – the new BASF super computer – accelerates discovery, makes manufacturing processes more efficient, optimizes logistics faster than ever before and supports completely new digital business models.

Brudermüller was born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1961. He received his degree in Chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1985. After earning his doctorate in Karlsruhe in 1987, he did a postdoc at the University of California, Berkeley. He joined BASF in 1988 as a research scientist in the Ammonia Laboratory. Subsequently, he had various positions in business, production and strategic planning until he became president of the Functional Polymers division in 2003. Brudermüller has been a member of the Board of Executive Directors since 2006. From 2011 he assumed the position of the Vice Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE and since 2015 additionally Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

In May 2018 Brudermüller became Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer (CTO). He is member of various institutions and academies, including the Senate Committees of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science and the German National Academy of Science and Engineering.

 

Bob Patel - 2019 Outstanding Global Growth Leadership Award

Bob Patel – CEO of LyondellBasell. In 2018, LyondellBasell, one of the largest plastics, chemicals and refining companies in the world, completed the acquisition of A. Schulman, Inc. expanding the company’s reach into additional high-growth, high-margin end markets; broke ground on the world’s largest propylene oxide and tertiary butyl alcohol (PO/TBA)  plant; and plans to start up the world’s first Hyperzone PE plant in 2019. Mr. Patel assumed the position of CEO in January 2015 after having served as executive vice president, Olefins and Polyolefins and previously senior vice president. Mr. Patel joined LyondellBasell in March 2010 and as executive vice president successfully led the restructuring of key company’s O&P and Technology segments, focusing on achieving best-in-class operational and commercial excellence.  

Mr. Patel was responsible for LyondellBasell’s manufacturing facilities and commercial operations. In 2011, he led the effort to reposition the business, increasing overall competitiveness, efficiency and earnings. As CEO, Mr. Patel has focused on leading the next phase of the company’s long-term growth strategy. Under Mr. Patel’s leadership, LyondellBasell was named to Fortune Magazine’s list of “World’s Most Admired Companies” in 2018 and 2019. 

Previously, Mr. Patel held positions at Chevron for more than 20 years. Mr. Patel is a member of the Business Council and The Business Roundtable. He previously served as the 2018 chairman of the American Chemistry Council. Mr. Patel serves on the board of Union Pacific Corporation. He earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from The Ohio State University and holds a Master of Business Administration from Temple University.
